Newborn Lifestyle Session | What To Expect

What is a newborn lifestyle session?

I absolute love newborn lifestyle sessions! There’s just nothing like a brand new little one… the tiny little fingers and toes, sweet faces and grunts, and of course mommy, daddy and siblings, soaking it all in. A lifestyle session captures the sweetest new moments with your precious baby, in the comfort of your own home. In a very relaxed and natural setting, I will capture special moments of your baby alone, with each family member, and your family as a whole.

Where will the session take place?

The session takes place in the client’s home, preferably in the nursery, master bedroom, and living room. A few things you can do to prepare is to open all blinds and curtains, to let in as much of that wonderful natural light as possible, have the master bed made (it’s the perfect spot to capture some family shots) and declutter areas that would be photographed in those main rooms. Don’t stress if the house isn’t spotless; we can clear away and re-arrange as needed during your session!

How can I make my baby as comfortable and coorpertive as possible during the shoot?

Newborns are most comfortable in a warm environment, so please crank that heat and/or have a space heater to keep your sweet little one warm! Don’t worry about your baby crying or needing to eat during the shoot, our newborn session is purposely longer to allow for plenty of breaks to feed, change or snuggle your little one.  It’s usually a good idea to feed your baby right before the session so they’re sleepy and content… that perfect “milk drunk” state, so to say!

What should we wear for the session?

I recommend keeping it simple and comfortable! For baby, a white or neutral onesie allows the photos to really focus on their precious little features and expressions. For family, neutral and light colors (creams, whites, grays or pastel tones) work best, as they don’t take away from the natural beauty of your baby.  Stay away from prominent logos or writing on clothing. Solid tops or tops with florals or textures, such as big knits and lace, work best. If you have any questions or would like help with outfit ideas, I’m happy to share a Pinterest board of outfit ideas! I will bring different swaddles, blankets, headbands and plain white onesies to use as needed.

What can I do to prepare for the session?

Try to just soak in all the sweetness of your little one and not stress about everything being “perfect.” It will be laid back, and baby will take the lead. It’s okay if baby, siblings, or fur-babies aren’t cooperating like you had hoped or wanted them to. I promise that we can still capture the sweetest moments, even in the midst of chaos.
